ABOUT US

Nestled in the heart of the Buganda Kingdom, BUMU Art Gallery is more than a space—it is a living tribute to the Kingdom’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. Positioned within the Buganda Cultural Centre, near Butikkiro (the Katikkiro’s official residence) and a stone’s throw from Twekobe (the Kabaka’s Palace), BUMU serves as a vibrant platform for both emerging and established artists to express Uganda’s evolving identity through diverse styles, mediums, and narratives.

The gallery embodies Buganda’s long-standing tradition of cultural inclusivity, offering a welcoming space where art is not merely decoration, but a powerful language of heritage—a visual symphony that captures the dreams, struggles, and triumphs of a people. Every brushstroke and sculpted form becomes a conversation between past and present, preserving and reimagining identity through creative expression.

BUMU was founded in response to the urgent need to uplift Ugandan artists who often face barriers to visibility, financial stability, and public engagement. Too many gifted creators remain unseen, yet art holds immense potential to sustain livelihoods and contribute to national identity. Through curated exhibitions, mentorship, and cultural programming, BUMU strives to support and elevate these voices.

The gallery operates under the distinguished patronage of HRH Nnaalinya Agnes Nabaloga, sister to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and daughter of Ssekabaka Mutesa II. In her royal capacity as Lubuga (King’s Sister), Nnaalinya plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Buganda’s cultural heritage. Her commitment to the arts and cultural preservation has been instrumental in shaping the gallery’s vision and mission, ensuring that BUMU remains a beacon of creativity, tradition, and transformation.
